“Winter Spring Summer or Fall” (film & soundtrack) out today!
Paramount Republic Pictures releases “Winter Spring Summer or Fall” today in theaters and VOD:
There is so much to say about this one, it’s hard to know where to begin. I’ll start with relief… I’m so glad this movie is finally coming out. It has been such a long road.
We finished production in December of 2022 (just before the release of Wednesday season 1) and wrapped post-production in March of 2023. Then… the STRIKES… and it didn’t get a premiere until June of 2024 at the Tribeca Film Festival in NYC. And now, on April 25th of 2025 -two years after locking picture, it can finally be seen by the general public. It feels like we have been waiting forever, and the film industry's near collapse over the past couple of years has, at times, made the future of this film seem existentially uncertain.
This may be a little movie, but it has a lot of heart, and in some ways, it’s my favorite project of my career so far. Music is such a big part of this story that I was hands-on with nearly every stage of it, from aspects of the script to production to all of the standard post-production music needs, and even through a soundtrack release.
I was able to not only attach my friend, rising star film composer Zac Rae (of Death Cab for Cutie fame) to score the movie, but also the brilliant songwriter/recording artist Evangeline, to co-star as herself in the film, performing her songs on camera.
Film productions are intense… Sometimes grueling, and sometimes even a little scary, depending on the personalities involved. When you get to work with a talented group of people who all care about not just the end result but also each other, it makes a world of difference in the process. That’s exactly what this experience was.
I was lucky to work for another dear friend, Director Tiffany Paulsen (writer of Holidate, About Fate, Nancy Drew) , who put a huge amount of trust in me when it came to anything involving music. It was all positive energy from pre-production through post, even when things were tough (which was plenty). It’s always the director who sets that tone at the top, and she created an environment that encouraged creative voices to be heard, which made everything so much more fun and invigorating.
(The text that started it all)
When I first heard the demo for Evangeline’s “What Are You Doing Later?” I instantly loved it, and I thought there might be a place in this film for it. At the very least, I knew that Tiffany had to hear it, and even then, I felt like it could maybe be the climactic/romantic end title song of the film that it ultimately became.
It was early October of 2022 when she sent it to me in a text message. I had only met Eva officially once before, but I was already a fan from seeing her perform a couple of times around LA.
Her songs were great of course, but she also had that difficult-to-define charisma on stage that true stars have. The kind that pulls you in and makes you stop talking and listen to really quiet songs while being quiet in a room full of strangers.
Coincidentally, Tiffany’s film that we had been discussing for the past year had just been greenlit by MPCA for Paramount, and I was in the very early stages of starting work on it that week. Tiffany needed to get the film set up fast and in Utah… for a story set in New Jersey and Boston, no less. We needed a cool recording artist to feature for an important plot point in the 3rd act, and suddenly, not much time to find one. We knew that we wanted to cast a real artist and not an actor playing a made-up character, and earlier in the year we had decided that maybe, rather than the shambolic and very male rock band as originally written, that it would be cooler to cast a woman to be the central figure in that space. When Eva reached out with that song, the lightbulb went on.
From there, it didn’t take long. I sent the song to Tiffany, who immediately loved it, and then I set up a meeting between them. Evangeline was the only artist we considered for the role, and a few weeks later, we were in Salt Lake City shooting her performing two of her songs on camera in addition to some other, more dialogue-heavy scenes with the male lead in the film, Percy Heinz White.
If you look closely, you’ll even see me on bass in her “on-camera band,” which was pretty fun.
You can catch a little bit of us in the trailer below:
Now, two years later, on the eve of the film’s commercial release, Evangeline has dropped a surprise music video for the song in support of an official soundtrack on Lakeshore Records featuring all four of her songs from the film as well as Zac’s lovely and intimate original score.
